Formatting the Design - #4

Eddy. (2025, October 1). The role of minimalism in graphic design: balancing aesthetics and functionality. RMCAD. https://www.rmcad.edu/blog/the-role-of-minimalism-in-graphic-design-balancing-aesthetics-and-functionality/

For the final design of my capstone project, I have chosen to follow a minimalist design. "According to research published in the American Research Journal of Humanities Social Science, the minimalist movement operates under the belief that “less is more.” (Eddy, 2025) With simpler and/or fewer designs filling a page of the design, the designer is over full reign of the consumer. The article accentuates three key aspects of minimalist design: negative space, visual hierarchy, and functionality. In terms of design, negative space is the area that is not filled around an object. This breathing room allows the design to be the main focus and assist the consumer with understanding its overall meaning. Visual hierarchy can help both the designer and consumer in receiving the information the design provides, typically from the most important to the least important. Lastly, when considering functionality in a minimalist design, every element matters. Designers are challenged to provide as much context as possible in as few components as possible. The design should be able to tell an entire story or should lead the consumer to discover more about the design and its premises. These elements also aid in the aesthetics of the design, which are the attractive elements meant to catch the viewer's eye. It's important for designers to remember that less is more, but that shouldn't mean the consumer should be shortchanged on the piece's information.

In my design, I want the viewer to explore and open their minds to the possibilities and creativity of the DAT program. There isn't one specific definition or way of describing what this program does. I feel the minimalist design is more educational than filling the entire book up with boatloads of information that may or may not capture the player's interest. I am also challenging myself to not use any premade minimalist designs available in the Canva library. I want to continue to develop my skillset and capabilities as a graphic designer as I venture out to creare with various clientele and purposes.

The image above was featured at the top of this article and is a representation of minimalist design. The image mimics The Creation of Adam painting by Michelangelo in a modern way. The loading symbol is representative of the moment the viewer is waiting for. The circle represents the halo of God and heaven. The positioning of both hands is also intentional, making the consumer reconsider all parts of the design.
